Although steel wasn’t invented in America, since the Industrial Revolution of the mid-1800’s, it has become an integral part of the American consciousness. Across the decades the industry has gone through many changes and setbacks, but like the United States of America, it still endures.
In honor of Independence Day, we’ve compiled this list of 5 facts from various sources, including the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) to celebrate steel in the United States and to salute this glorious nation.
1.Steel is a family business: According to the AISC, there are over 2,300 steel fabrication shops across the United States. Like Eco-Advantage here in Phoenix, AZ, most steel fabrication businesses are family owned. The small, family business is the heart of the American economy and the epitome of the American Dream.
2. Steel is an eco-friendly industry: In fact, according to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel is the number one recycled material in North America. In the United States, recycling rates for steel beat those of aluminum, glass, plastic, and paper, combined. Almost 98% is recycled and made into new steel products.
3.Steel is a job creator: For every 45 tons of structural steel produced, fabricated, and erected in the US, one job is created. 7.2 billion tons of steel are created a year, so that number translates to 160,000 jobs every year from steel!
4.Steel is cutting edge: Yes, steel has been around for a long time now, since the 13th century in fact. However, according to AISI, technological advances in steel creation has changed the world in more ways than any other material. The modern steel industry may have begun in the 1850’s, but advances in steel production didn’t stop. These days high-performance steel is used in jets, surgery, rockets, and roller coasters.
5.Steel is versatile: When you think of steel, you might picture the construction industry and tall buildings, or maybe scaffolding. Alternatively, you might think of cars, or trains and train tracks. But besides those uses, steel can be beautiful too. It can be fabricated into any shape your imagination can come up with from elaborate designs on a screen door to animals of the southwest and even our American Flag.
We hope our list of facts about steel in the United States has inspired you and helped you take even more pride in our country this Independence Day. Steel is an American institution in more ways than one. It creates jobs for Americans, is one of the most recycled materials, and is often a family business. Steel is what we build our doors, window guards, gates, patio furniture, wall art and other home items out of.
